Semi-Permanent Dyes: what Are They and How They work

Semi-permanent hair dyes are dyes that last only 4 to 6 weeks, so the color usually fades much sooner than permanent dyes.

The reason behind the short life spam of permanent hair dyes is because they are made without ammonia and peroxide which are two key chemicals for color longevity.

Do I have to Bleach my Hair to use a Semi-Permanent hair color?

Generally, you don’t have to bleach your hair to try on semi-permanent dyes but that also depends on your natural hair tone so let’s break it down:

Dark hair:

If you have dark hair and want to dye It something really bright its best to bleach it, otherwise the semi dye color wont show up on your dark brown or dark black hair.

Light to Medium Hair ( light brown or blonde):

If your hair is already light, there is no need to bleach it you can apply the dye instantly to your hair.

What Happens When the Dye Color Fades?

You might be wondering if your original hair color will pop back when the dye fades out, it might but it will take a long time and the reason behind that is as follows:

First it depends on how often you wash your hair because washing the hair often will fade the color much faster than it usually wood,

The second reason is that before your original color comes back there is a long period of fading that will take place. The color you chose will fade into lighter and lighter colors leaving a tint behind it.

Its important to note here that if your original hair color is bright then the tine will take longer to get washed away completely.

The third reason is your hair condition: if your hair is healthy the color will take longer to fade, however, if your hair is dry and damaged the dye won’t last a long time on it.

How to prolong the life of your Semi-permanent dye?

Avoid Frequent Washing: Wash hair less often to preserve color and use sulfate-free shampoos that are gentle on color-treated hair. You can use dry shampoo in between washes to keep your dyed hair color fresh and not wash it away.

Protect from Heat Styling: Excessive heat styling can fade color faster. Recommend using a heat protectant spray before styling.

Use Deep conditioners that are suitable for color treated hair: these conditioners are formulated to protect the color while nourishing the hair so that it doesn’t dry out.

Using Semi-permanent dyes can be a safe way for you to experiment and try out different shades to see how they will look on you. With proper care, your hair will stay healthy and vibrant throughout the process, and as the color fades, your natural shade will gradually emerge, allowing you to seamlessly transition back if needed.
